DRUMBEAT

DRUMBEAT stands for Discovering Relationships Using Music, Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes, and Thoughts. It’s a unique program that uses hand drumming to help participants develop social and emotional skills. It focuses on building healthy relationships and fostering a sense of connection with oneself and others.

Here at Masterpiece Psychology, we devise a comprehensive treatment plan that includes DRUMBEAT to help you regulate your emotions so you can improve your quality of life and enjoy wellbeing.

How DRUMBEAT Works

The DRUMBEAT program uses hand drumming as a foundation for building social and emotional skills in a group setting. It typically involves groups of 8-12 participants meeting for 10 weekly sessions, lasting around an hour each.

At Masterpiece Psychology, we offer individual sessions as well.

The program has different themes throughout the sessions, addressing aspects like self-responsibility, values clarification, emotional expression, and navigating peer pressure.
Here’s a more detailed look at how DRUMBEAT works:

Focus on experience over talk therapy

Around 70% of the program is experiential, meaning you learn through actively participating and creating music together, rather than just talking about challenges.

Building connections through rhythm

The act of drumming together fosters a sense of connection and teamwork. As the group progresses and their drumming becomes more cohesive, it reflects their improved social skills.

Learning by analogy

The facilitators use analogies based on the drumming experience to discuss real-life social situations. This can help participants connect the drumming concepts to their own challenges and develop new strategies. Overall, DRUMBEAT offers a unique way to develop social and emotional skills in a fun and engaging environment.

Re-evaluation

At the beginning of the next session, we will check your current mental state and review the effects of the previous session.  We’ll assess your response to the previous target and determine if further reprocessing is needed. We’ll also identify new areas that may need to be addressed as part of the ongoing treatment.

Here at Masterpiece Psychology, we create a comprehensive treatment plan with EMDR technique and other evidence-based methods. We’ll help you lessen the impact of the memories of past traumatic events and negative thoughts you may have about yourself.  Our ultimate goal is to help you enhance your resilience against your triggers and stressors so you can improve your quality of life significantly.

How DRUMBEAT can help you overcome your challenges

Anxiety

The rhythmic drumming creates a calming effect, similar to meditation, by syncing your brainwaves and reducing activity in your fear centre. Plus, focusing on drumming keeps your mind present, away from your anxious thoughts. And if social situations make you anxious, DRUMBEAT provides a safe space to express yourself creatively through drumming, without pressure to talk.

Neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders)

DRUMBEAT can help bridge the gap for those with neurodiversity. The structured drumming circles offer a safe space to practise social skills like turn-taking and cooperation. Also, drumming allows for non-verbal communication, perfect for those who struggle with verbal expression. As participants master drumming and experience success together, their confidence soars, potentially reducing social anxiety and boosting self-esteem.
