Mediation

Here at Masterpiece Psychology, our mediation services will help you move from conflict to resolution in a way that respects the needs and interests of all parties involved, and possibly, mend your relationships.

How Mediation Works

Masterpiece Psychology provides a structured process designed to help couples or families resolve disputes and conflicts in a constructive and collaborative manner. Here’s an overview of how our mediation services work:

Initial Consultation

The mediation process begins with an initial consultation where we meet with the parties involved, either together or separately, to understand the nature of the conflict, the background of the dispute, and the goals each party has for resolution.

Creating a Safe Environment

We ensure that the mediation takes place in a confidential and respectful environment where all parties feel heard and understood.

Exploring Issues and Interests Through Neutral Facilitation

Our psychologists will serve as a neutral facilitator. Together, we will identify and explore the underlying issues and interests behind the conflict. Understanding these deeper motivations is key to finding mutually acceptable solutions.

As mediators, our role is not to take sides or make decisions for the parties but to guide the discussion in a way that allows everyone to express their viewpoints and concerns openly and safely.

Generating Options

We will assist the parties in brainstorming potential solutions to the conflict. We help them navigate these discussions and negotiate to the other parties to generate options to solve the problem.

This creative process encourages thinking outside of traditional positions to identify options that might satisfy the needs and interests of all involved.

Agreement and Resolution

Once a mutually acceptable solution is reached, we help the parties formalise their agreement. This may involve drafting a written agreement that outlines the terms of the resolution and any future steps to be taken.

Follow-Up

Depending on the nature of the agreement, a follow-up session may be scheduled to assess how the resolution is being implemented and to address any new issues that may have arisen.

Frequently Asked Questions

The duration of mediation varies depending on the complexity of the issues and the willingness of the parties to work towards a resolution. A single session can last from a couple of hours to a full day, and some disputes may require multiple sessions over weeks or months.
If an agreement can’t be reached, parties still have the option to pursue other resolution methods, such as arbitration or litigation. However, the mediation process often helps clarify issues and positions, which can be beneficial in any subsequent steps.
Agreements can be made legally binding if the parties decide to formalise the terms into a contract and sign it. In cases involving family law, agreements may need to be approved by a court to become enforceable.
Mediation is a voluntary, confidential process focused on mutual agreement, whereas court proceedings are adversarial, public, and result in a decision being made by a judge or jury. Mediation also tends to be quicker and less costly than litigation.
Yes, parties are welcome to bring legal representation to mediation sessions if they wish. Lawyers can provide advice during the process and help ensure that any agreement is in their client’s best interests.
Information shared in mediation is confidential and cannot be used in court should the dispute progress to litigation. Mediators are bound by confidentiality agreements, ensuring that what is discussed in mediation stays in mediation.
As a mediator, I maintain neutrality by not taking sides, not making decisions for the parties, and by managing the process in a way that gives each party equal opportunity to express their views and concerns. My role is to facilitate communication and help identify solutions, not to judge or influence the outcome based on personal opinions.
