Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a therapy technique that uses real-time feedback from EEG readings to train individuals to regulate their brain activity.

It’s based on the concept that by monitoring and modifying brainwave patterns, people can learn to improve various cognitive, emotional, and physiological functions.

This form of therapy can help with anxiety, trauma, poor sleep, brain functioning and chronic pain. Speak with us to know more.

How Neurofeedback Works

Neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback, is a type of therapy that aims to train individuals to regulate their brain activity. It’s like a workout for your brain that trains it to function better. Here’s how it typically works:

Initial assessment

First, we'll have an assessment where we’ll talk about your symptoms, health history, and what you hope to achieve with neurofeedback. This will help us understand your needs and plan your treatment. We will then undertake some baseline measures, which will allow us to track progress.

Setting up

In a neurofeedback session, you'll sit comfortably in a chair and your therapist will place small sensors on your scalp. Don’t worry, these sensors are non-invasive – they just rest on your skin. They're connected to a computer and monitor your brain's electrical activity, or brainwaves.

Monitoring your brain activity

During a neurofeedback session, sensors are placed on the scalp to measure electrical activity in the brain, or brainwaves. This activity is displayed on a monitor in real-time using an EEG (electroencephalogram) machine.

For instance, you might watch a video or play a simple video game that responds to your brainwave patterns. The video or game reacts in real-time to the brain's activity, providing instant feedback.

Training your brain

The goal is to train your brain to produce certain types of brainwaves that are associated with calm, focus, or relaxation.

When your brain activity changes in the desired way, the video game responds positively – like your character speeds up or the music plays smoothly. If your brain activity deviates, the game might slow down or the screen might dim. This feedback helps your brain learn the desired activity pattern.

Repetition and learning

Just like learning a new skill, neurofeedback takes practice and repetition. Over multiple sessions, your brain starts to "learn" these new patterns. You're essentially training your brain to function more efficiently.

Progress and adaptation

We'll track your progress over time. We may adjust the therapy as you improve or as we target different areas. The number of sessions you'll need can vary – some people see changes quickly, while others need more time.

It's important to integrate neurofeedback with other healthy practices like good sleep, exercise, and stress management. This holistic approach supports the best outcomes.

Here at Masterpiece Psychology, we can design a treatment plan that includes neurofeedback and other evidence-based methods to address your challenges and help you have a great quality of life.

How Neurofeedback can help you overcome your challenges

Anxiety

Neurofeedback helps in enhancing relaxation and reducing the over-activation of the brain that often occurs with anxiety. You will learn to control and reduce anxious responses by reinforcing brainwave patterns associated with calm and relaxation.

Brain Function

Neurofeedback can help with a range of cognitive/brain functioning including emotion regulation, attention, mental flexibility, and inhibition control, which are present in a range of diagnoses.

Poor Sleep

Neurofeedback trains the brain to produce brainwave patterns associated with relaxation and drowsiness, addressing issues like insomnia or restless sleep.

Trauma

In cases of trauma, especially PTSD, neurofeedback can help regulate the brain's response to stress and trauma triggers. It normalises brainwave patterns that are dysregulated due to traumatic experiences to help patients process traumatic memories more healthily.

Chronic Pain

Neurofeedback can help manage chronic pain by altering the way your brain perceives and processes pain signals. It can also reduce the stress and anxiety often associated with chronic pain, which can exacerbate the pain experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

The time to see results can vary. Some people notice changes within a few sessions, while others may need more time, often 30+ sessions. It depends on the individual and the specific issues being addressed. For example, ADHD has been shown to require 30 sessions for long-term change.
Neurofeedback is generally considered safe. It’s non-invasive and doesn’t involve medication. Some people might experience temporary discomfort like headache or fatigue after a session, but serious side effects are rare.

The effects of neurofeedback have been shown to be long-lasting. Once your brain learns to regulate its activity more efficiently, it often continues to use these new patterns. However, some individuals may need an occasional ‘booster’ course.

Yes, neurofeedback can be used with children, often from the age of about 5 or 6. It’s been found to be particularly beneficial for conditions like ADHD in children.

While meditation and relaxation also affect brain activity, neurofeedback provides direct, real-time feedback on brain activity, making it a more targeted approach to training specific brainwave patterns.

It often depends on your individual situation. Neurofeedback can be used alongside other therapies, and in some cases, it might enhance the effectiveness of these therapies.
