Laughter for managing anxiety

There are a range of health benefits that come with having a good laugh. Laughter triggers healthy physical changes in the body. For example, it strengthens the immune system, creates a higher pain threshold, boosts your energy, and protects you from the damaging effects that stress can cause. Here are some specific ways that laughter increases health and lowers anxiety:

Laughter relaxes the body. Often when our body is in a state of high stress or anxiety our muscles can tighten, leading to neck pain and headaches. However, by laughing, our muscles begin to relax, which can relieve some of this tension and stress.

  • Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter can improve your resistance to disease and ability to fight infection by increases immune cells and antibodies.
  • Laughter triggers the release of endorphins. These are natural chemicals in the body that make us ‘feel good’. So when we laugh, endorphins are released around the body which contributes to a sense of feeling happy and also temporarily relieve pain.
  • Laughter protects the heart. Laughter can help protect you against cardiovascular problems by increasing blood flow around the body.
